Our Forest School

Learning Through Nature, Where muddy boots, big smiles, and bright futures grow

A Natural Start to Learning

At BeBright Preschool in Spalding, we believe children learn best when they feel free to explore, imagine, and get stuck in. That’s why our Forest School is a big part of what we do.

Set in our very own private woodland space, just a short ride away on Buddy the Bus, our Forest School gives children aged 2 to 5 the space to be themselves, messy, curious, full of wonder.

Whether it’s climbing, digging, den-building or just spotting bugs under a log, this is where children grow in confidence and learn about the world by living it.

Book a visit and let your child discover the joy of learning outdoors at BeBright Forest School.

Our mission is simple

To give every child a rich and joyful outdoor learning experience that supports their whole development heart, mind, body, and spirit.

At BeBright Forest School, children are seen, heard, and celebrated just as they are. We guide them to become confident, resilient, and caring little people who love nature and love learning.

Our Vision for Every Child

We want every child at BeBright Forest School to:

  • Build a strong, lifelong connection with nature

  • Feel safe, seen, and proud of who they are

  • Learn through play, curiosity, and real-world adventures

  • Grow in confidence, creativity, and independence

Here, learning isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about listening to the birds, jumping in puddles, asking questions, and discovering the joy of the outdoors together.

What is Forest School?

Forest School is a child-centred educational approach that supports holistic development through regular sessions in a natural outdoor setting. Rooted in play and exploration, it nurtures independence, confidence, and a deep respect for the environment.

Originating from the Scandinavian concept of friluftsliv—the open-air life—Forest School was introduced to the UK in 1993 and has grown into a widely embraced approach, with thousands of trained practitioners across the country.

Today, it’s embraced by thousands of preschools, and at BeBright, it’s something we live and breathe.

Forest School Principles

Forest School is underpinned by six core principles:
  1. Regular, Long-Term Sessions: Forest School is a consistent process, not a one-off experience.

  2. Natural Setting: Sessions take place in woodland or natural spaces, fostering a connection to nature.

  3. Holistic Development: The whole child is supported—socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively.

  4. Supported Risk-Taking: Children are encouraged to take appropriate risks in a supported environment.

  5. Qualified Practitioners: Forest School is led by trained professionals who continually develop their practice.

  6. Learner-Centred Approach: Sessions are shaped around the interests, ideas, and needs of the children.

What Happens During Our Forest School Sessions?

At BeBright, our Forest School sessions are driven by the needs and interests of the children, guided by the six core principles. Activities are purposeful but flexible, allowing for creativity, challenge, and wonder. A typical session includes:

  1. Arrival: Travel by preschool minibus and walk to the site

  2. Site Check & Setup: Safety scan and setting up key play zones (mud kitchen, loose parts, toilet)

  3. Group Welcome: Recap of previous sessions and introduction to any new optional activities

  4. Child-Led Exploration: Free play in various zones including water play, obstacle courses, nature crafts, tool use, and fire safety activities

  5. Group Reflection: Snack time with stories, discussion, and reflection

  6. Closing Activities: Perimeter walk or parachute game, pack up and return

Throughout the session, children are free to explore their interests while practitioners observe, guide, and extend learning in a responsive way.
